I have a real estate friend (ok I have a few more than a few).
Like me, if there’s a social media channel, he’s probably got a profile on it. When it comes to ‘private’ messages I know he sticks to Facebook. That’s just fine. FB Messenger is a fine way to communicate. I have other friends who do the same thing only with Google Plus or Twitter DMs. If it works for you – go for it!
But here’s the thing. We’re all different. What works best for you may not be what works best for me. I have friends who live and die solely by Twitter. If they want to communicate with me – it’s via a DM (direct message).
When we’re dealing with potential new clients, their first and maybe ONLY method of contacting us might not be in our favorite channel, it just be in their favorite channel. There’s a reason I put all those social media links over there on the right side. Those are direct links to all the channels I have a profile on.
Having a Profile is one thing, listening is another. If Step One is completing your Profile, Step Two should be setting up proper notifications so that when someone sends you a message, you see it and can respond.
I wrote about this 2 years ago. “You can’t argue with someone who’s not listening“
So last week I was ‘testing’ my friend. Each day I would send him a picture and message of what I had for breakfast. I did this privately, much in the same manner a new client of his might. I used a variety of social media channels.
Did he hear me?
Sadly, he often did not, or at least not in a timely manner. This next week we’re going to work on setting up the notifications so that he does. If you turn on all notifications you’ll blow up your phone and computer. Disruption like that is never a good thing. I realize there’s also a balance between noise and signal. We need to better sort and refine the signal from the noise, and we’re going to work on that too.
Quite funny, I posted a photo of my breakfast publicly on Facebook with a small note about what I was doing. The comment thread quickly took a turn and went a completely different direction.
