Embedding a video on your WordPress blog is pretty easy. Grab the embed code and viola!
There are also short codes that will work (and have you tried just adding the video URL to your post to see what happens?)
But what if you wanted to have a page on your site that showcased ALL of your videos on YouTube? Or maybe just a playlist? What if you wanted that page to update automatically?
That’s where TubePress really shined! With a quick little setup you could display all your videos, your favorites, or even just those from a specific playlist. As new videos get added to the channel your page would automatically be updated as well. Until.
Until YouTube changed their API. That’s when your wonderful TubePress enabled page crashed and burned.
It’s not TubePress’ fault, it was YouTube. They changed the rules. You can read more about it here.
The good news is that TubePress figured out how to play along with the new rules. The bad news is that you can’t use their FREE plugin anymore for the same effects. They do offer a slimmed down version in the WordPress plugin depository but you’ll want the paid version.
If you still want FREE, I’ve been playing with another called YouTube Channel Gallery. It’s not nearly as robust as TubePress, doesn’t have as many options, and is moderately difficult to setup – but it’s FREE. I’m testing on a page on the REBarCamp.com site that pulls in assorted videos I’ve found on REBC’s around the world.
Why does it have my video at the top? The sorting is based on the number of views and that’s the highest one. Click on a thumbnail below and the top video (it’s the player) plays the video you want. I worked pretty hard to make it look this way. So much so that I started writing a post on how to do it and gave up as it was way too long. If I was using TubePress it would have been just a click, click, click and it would have been done!
Moral of the story: Free might be good but sometimes it pays to pay. For the record, a premium version of TubePress will run you $40 a year. http://tubepress.com/pricing/
