There was some big “WordPress” news last week when W3Techs announced that WordPress now powers over 40% of the top 10 million websites!
WordPress plays in a league of its own. It’s not only the usage numbers, also the ecosystem around WordPress is absolutely remarkable. There are more than 58,000 plugins, more than 8,000 themes, and any number of companies and individuals that make a living from creating WordPress sites.
Chances are, many of your favorite sites are powered by WordPress and you probably didn’t even know it.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
So you’re thinking 40% is big but that also means there’s 60% of other ways people are building their sites. Site builders like Wix or Squarespace, right? But here’s the numbers on those:
- Shopify – 3.3%
- Joomla – 2.1%
- Squarespace – 1.6%
- Drupal – 1.5%
- Wix – 1.5%
That’s a far cry from the market share that WordPress has. So while you can build on any platform and have a perfectly nice looking site I’d not recommend it.
From a developers point of view, if I get a killer idea and want to create an app that’ll change the world, guess what platform I’m going to build it for? That’s just one reason your site should be built on WordPress.
