20 Secret Blogging Tips in 20 Days
Every time I hear the number 11 I think of Elevenses
Check out the bottom of this post to see the rest.
What time of the day should your post publish?
That’s a great question.
Generally I would think that ANY time is a good time but I know you want a better answer than that eh?
I’ve found over the years that for my audience the first thing in the morning generally grabs the greatest amount of readers from social networking sites. I’m guessing that it’s partly because people check their Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and ImaBelieber networks before buckling down to get real work done.
That poses a problem. The AreWeConnected Posse is located all across the US and Canada. I am here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Posting the first thing in the morning for me (let’s say 8am) would catch my East Coast Peeps knee deep into their Elevenses! Nobody has time to +1 while reading my post – you might spill your tea! Oh the horror!
So, for me… The answer is to publish posts at 5AM my time. My post will hit the Wrong Coast at 8am (perfect) and I hope they’ll start the social sharing we all crave. Chicago and the heartland will catch the wave an hour later and we should have a nice compliment of Tweets, +1s and Shares by the time the lazy West Coast finally rolls out of bed. That’s the plan.
How do I know that? Google Analytics. Here’s a chart for a single day. The time scale at the bottom is in Pacific Time (my time zone). You can see build up from 5AM. You can also see that the WORST time for me to post is at 4PM Pacific. (and guess when I’m posting this post?)
Meanwhile back at the farm… I always wanted to use that in a post
Wait! 5AM? I’m either sleeping, feeding the dogs, or heading out for a Mountain Bike Ride. I’m no where near a computer.
That’s because I wrote the post days or hours earlier and scheduled the post. Did you know you can do that?
Chances are, your site defaults to “Publish Immediately”. There’s a small little edit button. Click it!
That’ll open up a new area where you can schedule the right day and time to post.
Easy Peasy right? But don’t just follow my lead. Your audience is different from mine you have to figure out what works best for your audience. When you do, you can write all your posts for a month in a single day and schedule them out over time!
Now, as a test… Please +1, Tweet and Share this post (I really am posting it at the worst time according to my chart on purpose)
UPDATE: almost 24 hours later here’s the way my social sharing buttons look. Do you think Time of Day important now?
What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about them, doesn’t he?
