How to title your Facebook Business Page

Often times I’m asked, “What’s the best title for my page?” That depends on the focus of your page, the engagement strategy you plan to use on the page and many other things.  (you did have an engagement strategy right?)

When you create your facebook business page you are presented with a box in which to title your page.

First of all, let me make this perfectly clear…  ANYTHING you do in that box above is permanent.  That means there’s no changing it.  That goes for the categories (radio buttons) and it goes for the Page name.  If you mess up, if you get it wrong, if you change your mind the ONLY option you have is to delete it.

When I first started my page I knew pages were indexed by Google.  I knew the power of keywords in a title.  So smarty pants Mike thought it wise to use all the available characters to cram as many keywords into the title as possible.  It looks like this:

pagetitle

Here’s what I didn’t think about.  That title is the first thing that shows up in the Facebook search results.  When a user types whatever they do in the search bar and that title shows up are they apt to click on it?  Is it engaging?  Is it warm and fuzzy?

In the case of my chosen title – No.  Quite the opposite.  In fact it comes off as rather “Salesy” and spammy.  I suck.  If you know me you also know I’m the direct opposite.  They could click on the title and check me out – if they do they’ll hit my custom landing tab.  It has a video explaining who I am and what I am about but I can’t help but wonder just how many people have been turned off by that title.

So what do you name your page? I can’t tell you.  I can tell you to step back, think about everything so that when you do create a title it will be the right one for you.
