Retaggr / Facebook Part 2

Naming Names

A little more than a month ago I wanted to quickly find my friend Lane Bailey’s Facebook profile.  I was reading one of his blog posts and in his sidebar was a Retaggr button.  Clicking on the Facebook link in his Retaggr Card I was instantly taken to his … ooops, no make that my profile page .  Realizing he had a bad link in his card I immediately told him.  Things like this happen all the time.

Friends don’t let friends have bad links

Shortly thereafter I got an email back from Lane stating that my Retaggr card was broken too!  How could that be?  Certainly I know what the link to my profile is, don’t I?

The other day I was doing much the same thing and happened upon yet another bad Retaggr link, then another and another.

The people I’ve named in the video are all smart, tech savvy bloggers.  They should know what a profile link should look like.

Facebook’s Error Default System

When you click on certain links that are broken or wrong Facebook recognizes the error but doesn’t tell you.  Instead it just brings up your own profile page.

As an example here’s two different links to try.

Which one took you to your profile and which one took you to mine?
HINT: If your link has your name in it – it’s not your profile link (unless you have a Vanity URL in which case you won’t have the /profile.php?id part).

That’s bad because if you are trying to test your own link it will appear as if it’s working.

Looking for the Source

I’ve brought this up with Nicholas Smit the founder of Retaggr and he says they are looking into it.  I’ll urge you NOT to wait.  This isn’t their problem, it’s yours.

Coincidentally, I was just about to comment on a blog, saw a Retaggr Card and guess what?  Yup!  It was broken too!  René Fabre – you better fix your card!

Of course I notified everyone of the people mentioned in the video and they have all fixed their links.  Have you checked yours?

Please, if you find other bad links – shout them out!

  • Thanks Mike! I'll look into it again... I did fall to the assumption it was working, using my vanity URL... Thanks again for the heads up...
  • HeyAmaretto
I went in- my profile was listed numerically, and I was able to get to the FB splash page from the large profile page but not from the badge (the smaller widget). Additionally, when I tried to remove the FB link altogether, Retaggr would not update to acknowledge that.
  • How can my profile be fixed http://activerain.com/blogs/ernal00
  • I checked the Retaggr site and you do have to use your numerical profile id.
I might just have to do a post about how to find that.
    It's really quite simple.
  • Lanre - it should be easy enough to go to ReTaggr, log in and fix the link. The question I'm going to have next is this - Do they allow for the new Facebook Vanity URL's?
