Last week I hit critical mass in Twitter. I reached the 2,000 limit for following people . I found out when I tried to add someone really important and couldn’t.
To rectify the problem, I went in to my follow list and started UN Following some people. The problem was, which ones? I decided that if you didn’t have a picture uploaded (Avatar) it was safe to say you were not using twitter. That made it easier. I quickly paired down to 1,900 and then stopped. I had enough room to add the next important (to me) twitters.
I’m thinking I may have stopped too soon.
Here’s my thought.
If twitter is like a big party… Imagine a big ballroom with people popping in and out all day long. Conversations happening here and there. People you know and people you don’t. My Ballroom is large, crowded and noisy.
Then again…
Some say twitter is like a stream. That stream reflects the constant flow of conversations happening. It might be a slow moving creek for some, or a swift river depending on the number of followers and the frequency of tweets. Either way, it’s the stream of conversation that gives twitter life.
By following 1,900 twits I’m afraid I’ve also diluted that stream, over packed that already crowded ballroom. While that might seem like I’m backing away from a popularity contest, it’s not.
I’m now hearing so many conversations, so many that don’t matter, that I am afraid that the important ones are slipping by unnoticed in the fast moving current.
They are
Last week a dear twit friend lamented that a relative was going in for emergency surgery.
He didn’t make it.
In the roar of the quickly moving twitter stream I missed her tweet, and more importantly missed out on sending my condolences and offering support when it was needed.
I heard about it second hand just now, I feel just awful.
Don’t get me wrong
Twitter is great for Mojitos .
Twitter is great for Rick Rolls , PhotoChops , and Blips .
Twitter is great fun, and I really, really love the party!
I really do.
I’m just thinking I need to be in a slightly smaller room, that’s all.
* I would love for you to follow me on twitter. If I don’t follow you back right away, will you understand?
